Check a sitemap before publishing or submitting it. Paste XML or upload an XML file up to 2 MB to review parsing, sitemap root and namespace, absolute URL entries, duplicates, and selected date and priority fields.
How to Use XML Sitemap Validator
- Paste a sitemap or sitemap index, or upload an XML file under 2 MB.
- Run validation and repair any XML parsing errors.
- Review entry-level warnings for URLs, duplicates, and selected fields.
- Check important destinations and publish the reviewed file.
Find problems in supplied sitemap XML
The validator accepts a URL sitemap or sitemap index and checks the supplied document locally. A malformed document must be repaired before individual entries can be reviewed. Common issues include unmatched tags, unescaped ampersands, missing location values, and repeated URLs.
Example: escape a URL query correctly
Inside XML, an ampersand separating query parameters needs entity escaping. A location value that contains an unescaped ampersand can break parsing even when the URL itself works in a browser. The XML Sitemap Generator handles XML escaping for the URLs you supply.
Understand a passed result
The tool checks selected structural and field requirements, including namespace and protocol limits. It is not a complete XML schema validation service. It does not fetch locations, verify redirect chains, or determine which URLs are canonical and indexable. A structurally clean file can still list pages that need a separate review.
Use the HTTP Status and Redirect Checker for important listed URLs, and the Robots.txt and Sitemap Finder to check public file locations after publication.
